A wind gust of 90 miles per hour was recorded overnight in Provincetown, according to the National Weather Service.

More than 26,300 Barnstable County customers were still without power at 7:15 p.m., for a total of over 44,800 customers without power in eastern Massachusetts, according to an Eversource power outage map. Falmouth had the most outages with over 5,700 at that time. On Martha’s Vineyard, about 800 customers didn’t have electricity.

Wind gusts of 78 miles and 72 miles per hour were reported in Mashpee and Harwich.

"The strongest winds have departed, but it’s still going to be very windy today," said National Weather Service meteorologist Hayden Frank.

The forecast is for wind gust of 40 to 60 miles per hour, Frank said. But "It won’t be like last night."

One of the biggest trouble spots was in the town of Falmouth, where downed trees lined busy roads including downtown.

Downed trees and power lines have pretty much blocked all access into Woods Hole, Falmouth Deputy Fire Chief Tim Smith said at noon.

When to Trim Trees and Shrubs

The best time to prune or trim trees and shrubs is during the late winter while they’re dormant. Pruning during the dormant season is ideal because:

The wounds heal faster, keeping the plant strong.
There is less risk of disease or pest infestation.
There is less sap flowing. Bleeding sap doesn’t really hurt the tree, but it’s messy and can attract pests.
It’s easier to see what you’re doing while the leaves are gone.

Pruning Guidelines:

Conifers: Prune in late winter while fully dormant.
Nonblooming Trees and Shrubs: Prune in late winter while fully dormant.
Summer-blooming Trees and Shrubs: Prune in late winter.
Spring-blooming Trees and Shrubs: Wait until immediately after they bloom. They are the exception to the rule, but you still should prune them as early as you can.

You can do the following any time of year:

Trim back small tree branches (the size you can cut with handheld lopping shears).
Lightly shape hedges and conifers.
Remove dead or diseased branches. If you live in an area prone to hurricanes or ice storms, it’s important to remove weakened branches in the fall – it’s better to prune at the wrong time than to have your tree injured by a storm!

"I would like to take a minute to compliment Stan Kielczewski and his crew. It is very rare that owners let me know what a great job a contractor is doing, especially whil the work os in progress. A number of owners called to let me know what a great job Stan and his crew did. I look forward to working with you and Stan and Joseph again next year."
