We use batteries almost every day; in TV remotes, smoke alarms, watches, mobile phones, computers and children's toys. However, even though batteries are recyclable, around 8,000 tonnes or 97 per cent end up in landfill each year.

New research cited in the Sydney Morning Herald shows the world is facing a rapidly growing incidence of myopia (or short-sightedness). But there is one simple remedy - "Spending 14 hours or more time outdoors per week can reduce myopia by up to one third."
